It has been years since the FIFA World Cup has generated so much buzz in the United States. The tournament gameplay has been superb and contains plenty of drama in each match. Players are displaying the “leave it all on the field” mentality, and the teams continue playing with a sense of urgency that soccer sometimes lacks.
A fútbol revolution has stormed the country. Who can blame it? The United States vs. Portugal game was ESPN’s highest-rated World Cup match ever. The U.S.A.’s heartbreaking draw not only proved the age old saying, “it’s not over until it’s over”, but the game showed many non-soccer fans the high level of talent and competition present within the World Cup.
However, the excitement has not been limited to the games involving the United States. Mexico’s late game surge against Croatia and Argentina’s nail biting win over Nigeria both exemplified high-tension games filled with emotion.
The World Cup has even had its fair share of controversy. Luis Suarez’s biting of Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini will not soon be forgotten, but even that incident was unable to outshine the world-class talent being displayed on the soccer pitch. While there will probably be no more biting incidents, all the dramatic conclusions of the world cup have yet to play out.
To all sports fans and interested parties looking to experience a World Cup match, I have to recommend going out and watching the game amongst a crowd. The atmosphere provided by passionate fans adds to the excitement of the tournament, and Orlando has several soccer-enthused establishments ready to welcome the masses.
